Charlotte pushed against one of the tall wooden doors that led to the main courtroom. Her legs ached from the morning’s run, and she felt a twinge in the muscles as the weight of the door pushed back, urging her not to enter. She thought about turning away from the courtroom, from the controversy. No. Hiding was not an option. Her father needed her there for him. She would not let him down. With that in mind, Charlotte pressed against the heavy door and stepped into the unknown.

The noise from the crowd in the gallery enveloped her as she stepped into the large room. The high ceilings of the courtroom could not contain the energy as reporters readied their cameras along the back wall, while onlookers, crammed in the benches that lined the gallery, chatted excitedly. Charlotte scanned the room, looking for a familiar face. She hadn’t seen her father since he disappeared for Mexico six weeks ago. There had been news articles that appeared on social media. She’d caught video of her father in custody as he left the US embassy, bound for a flight back to the United States. She’d refused to visit him since he’d returned home to the county lockup. She knew that today, seeing him in that orange jumpsuit, that would make it real.

“All rise!” hollered the bailiff near the front of the room. Those seated in the pew-like benches rose with the call. The wooden benches creaked with the mass movement of bodies, and the crowd momentarily obstructed Charlotte’s view from the back wall. She heard the bailiff’s call continue with, “This court is now in session, the Honorable John Balk presiding.”
